If you have your own Discovery 1 Straight Drop Arm we can supply the rest of the parts from this kit separately to go with your Arm.
This conversion uses our Solid Heavy Duty Steel Steering Bars, (SUMO-HD) they are 30mm solid EN8 Steel bar, designed to be used by all, on and off road.
When fitting the SUMO LOCK NUTS onto the track rod ends use plenty of grease on the threads, this will prevent the nuts seizing onto the track rod ends, we use MORRIS K48 grease, see HERE.
This is a conversion kit to change the standard Defender Swan Neck Drop Arm to a Straight Drop Arm from a Discovery 1 300tdi.
Benefits:-
- This is a much better Drop Arm for a Defender as it eliminates the press in ball joint that is used in a Defender Swan Neck Drop Arm and replaces it with a normal Track Rod End.
- The Defender press in ball joints can be very difficult to replace, a normal Track Rod End is much easier to replace.
- The Defender press in ball joints do not last very long before they start to show wear and play, a Track Rod End lasts a lot longer, the Track Rod Ends we use are Greaseable which last even longer.
- The Rubber Boots on Defender Swan Neck Drop Arms pop off quite easily allowing dirt and water into the joint causing premature wear, Track Rod End Boot does not pop off.
- Our Heavy Duty Steering Bars can give your steering a more solid feel, standard steering bars do flex quite easily.
Picture 3 shows the two different Drop Arms, the lower one is the Straight Discovery Drop Arm that is included in our kit, as you can see it uses a track rod end and not a press in ball joint that is difficult to replace.
If you are finding it difficult to remove your original drop arm with a puller, you can see in one of the pictures where a customer has cut a slot in the drop arm, it will then pull off much easier.
See the last picture showing how to align the drop arm once fitted, it is master splined so cannot be fitted in the wrong position on the splined shaft from the steering box. The drop arm should point slightly towards the driver’s side when driven in a straight line, also make sure you tighten and re check the nut that secures the drop arm to the steering box, this needs to be checked at least a couple of times after use due to the splined taper on the steering box.
The Torque Setting of the Drop Arm securing nut is 176 NM, it is VERY IMPORTANT that the tightness of this nut is rechecked after use.
Once you are satisfied the Drop Arm has fully worked up the tapered spline of the steering box and the nut remains tight you can then knock over the edges of the lock washer.
We can also do a kit for the early Discovery1 and RRc that don’t have the straight style drop arm, you will have to contact me on this to put a kit together.
The Kit includes:-
1 x SUMO-HD-830 Heavy Duty Steel Drag Link.
1 x L/H thread Greasable Track Rod End.
1 x R/H thread Greasable Track Rod End.
1 x GL79 RHD damper mount Eye/Pin.
1 x Disco drop arm straight RHD.
1 x SUMO-HD-1135 Heavy Duty Steel Track Rod Bar
1 x L/H thread Greasable Track Rod End.
1 x R/H thread Greasable Track Rod End.
SUMOBARS are the original Heavy Duty Steering Bars and arguably still the best, they are used all around the world from on road, off road, comp safari to extreme off road.
We now manufacture 2 types of steering bars –
SUMO-HD—-These are made from 30mm solid EN8 engineering grade CARBON STEEL BAR, designed to be used by all, on & off road.
SUMO-SS—-These are made from 30mm solid 303 STAINLESS STEEL BAR, these bars are the strongest bar in the Sumobars range, as stainless offers a much greater strength, it is 1.5 times stronger than steel, these bars can be used from on road to extreme off road use.
All our Sumobars are supplied with locking nuts, the Sumobar LOCK NUTS are full nuts (not like the cheaper copies which come with half nuts), this is for strength and security with less chance of rounding the nut whilst tightening, the steel nuts are 24mm and the stainless steel nuts are 27mm, both ends of the Sumobars have machined flats for ease of tightening the lock nuts to the bar. The right hand thread is easily identified with a grove machined around the bar and the lock nut.
Please remember all SUMOBARS are made from engineering grade steel, not to be confused with cheaper copy bars made from a low grade of mild steel.
All threads on the bars are double checked and are greased with WURTH corrosion-protecting aluminium-copper paste, this will stop the track rod ends seizing in the bars at a later date.
A Drag Link Bar is the bar from the steering box to the opposite wheel, (short bar in front of the front axle). A rough measurement of the Drag Link bar length before fitting, from centre of track rod end to centre of ball joint is 92.5cm.
A Track Rod Bar joins the 2 wheels together, (long bar behind the front axle). A rough measurement of the Track Rod bar length before fitting, from centre of track rod end to centre of track rod end is 123cm.
